**Tattoo Aftercare Guide**
After choosing your tattoo design and getting the ink done at a studio, tattoo aftercare is the most important aspect of your tattoo journey. Proper post-tattoo care should not be taken lightly; it's essential to know how to care for your tattoo effectively.
This comprehensive tattoo care guide will walk you through every stage of your tattoo journey, detailing what you should and shouldn't do to keep your tattoo looking perfect.
1. **Leave Your Bandage/Wrap On as Directed**
Some artists may ask you to keep your bandage on for only an hour, while others may recommend leaving it on for an entire day. Your artist knows what’s best for you and your tattoo, so make sure to follow their instructions.
2. **Wash Your Tattoo Thoroughly After Removing the Bandage/Wrap**
After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo carefully with warm water and fragrance-free soap to remove any excess or dried blood and plasma.
3. **Pat Your Tattoo Dry**
Use a clean paper towel to gently pat your tattoo dry. Do not rub the area.
4. **Apply a Small Amount of Lotion**
Once your tattoo is completely dry, apply a very thin layer of your chosen aftercare product or lotion to moisturize and nourish the area.
5. **Wash Your Tattoo Regularly**
Continue to clean your tattoo with fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water at least twice a day.
6. **Repeat the Cleaning Process Until Your Tattoo is Fully Healed**
Remember that your tattoo is not completely safe from germs and bacteria until it has finished scabbing and peeling, which usually takes 2-4 weeks. Keep washing the tattoo until it has completely healed.
7. **Do Not Pick at Flaking or Scabbing Skin**
Picking at your healing tattoo can delay the healing process, cause fading, and increase the risk of infection.
8. **Avoid Sun Exposure**
Keep your new tattoo out of intense sunlight, and do not apply any sunscreen to the area until it has fully healed.
9. **Stay Away from Water**
All bodies of water can harbor harmful bacteria that may damage a new tattoo. Take short showers instead of baths, and avoid swimming until your skin has fully healed.
10. **Continue Caring for Your Tattoo After It Heals**
Once healed, protect your tattoo from the sun and continue to moisturize the area regularly. Healthy skin leads to a healthy-looking tattoo.
By following these aftercare instructions, you can ensure that your tattoo remains vibrant and well-maintained for years to come.
